JJ Spaun mastered the rain – took home the US Open

The already hard -to -play track did not get easier by the heavy rainfall that swept over in Oakmont and made life miserable for many of the players. Not least for Sam Burns, who, before the completed round, was in lonely leadership but who accounted for two double bogeys and six bogeys during the closing round.

But the tough weather conditions, which allowed the game to be stopped for almost two hours, also provided great opportunities to climb for those who took the chance. And one who did it was the concealer JJ Spaun.

On the 17th hole took Spaun over the lead and then on the last hole crown it all by lowering a masterful putt of 20 meters for Birdie.

– I never thought I would hold this trophy. I’ve always had dreams and ambitions but a couple of months ago I didn’t know how good I could be. I’m proud of how hard I have fought, Spaun said.

The victory meant the career’s first major win, as the only player under par, and a prize money of around SEK 40 million.

Two came Robert MacIntyreScotland, two strokes after the winner, and the third Norwegian Viktor Hovland who slipped after early after four bogeys on the first nine holes.

« I missed a few short puts in the beginning and you can’t do that if you want to win a major, » the 27-year-old said.

No Swedish managed to get to this weekend’s game as both Ludvig Åberg and Joakim Lagergren previously missed the qualifying limit.
