Japan could buy more corn to spawn Trump

Today the Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba gave an update in parliament about the current conversations with the US. Japan still hopes to be exempt from the taxes. There have now been two negotiation rounds, without a breakthrough. Japan may import more American corn and use it as a raw material for biofuels, Ishiba said. That is less controversial than increasing rice import. Ishiba promised not to sacrifice the Japanese agricultural sector in his attempts to protect the Japanese car industry.

Numerous countries are currently negotiating with the US. The United Kingdom recently finally reached an outline agreement. Everything that comes out about that kind of discussions shows how complex they are. As a rule, it takes years for a trade agreement to be negotiated in detail. Now it has to be steam and boiling water under the threat of high taxes. With that in mind, the joint American-Chinese statement from this morning can also be read about de-escalation. It is a big step and an important signal, but at the same time only the start of difficult negotiations. There is some cold out of the sky, but no end to the uncertainty for world trade.
