Janson could give the Ombudsman’s message to the Saeima next week / day / day

Janson could give the Ombudsman’s message to the Saeima next week / day / day

The hypothetical report could be next Thursday, he stated.

It has already been reported that the Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa (ZZS) announced last week that Janson, given his regular absence, should assess his ability to continue his performance.

Janson, on the other hand, told LETA that he was in the hospital and about his future position when he was discharged.

It has also been reported that the Saeima Bureau has sent a formal letter to the competent authorities « requesting information to decide on further action ». Such a decision has been made because the Ombudsman has not repeatedly arrived in the Saeima to provide a report within the specified time.

Mieriņa has pointed out that the prolonged absence of the Ombudsman limits its comprehensive performance of the office, as certain functions of the Ombudsman can only be performed by the Ombudsman, including a report in the Saeima.

Last week’s Saeima sitting was transferred to the Ombudsman Juris Janson’s report, as Janson was ill. As the Saeima Speaker said at the Saeima, representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office have informed the Saeima that it is currently unknown how long the Ombudsman would be ill. The report is expected to be considered at one of the nearest Saeima sessions.

Latvian Television reported that Janson’s non -appearance for the Saeima has caused many deputies to be deeply disappointed, as this was not the first time he did not come. Several factions believe that this is disrespect, as the Ombudsman is a responsible official whose task is to inform the Saeima on issues of human rights and good governance.

Some parliamentarians pointed out that there should be some way out, and perhaps even the release of the Ombudsman, although such a procedure is relatively difficult. Labor legislation prevents the dismissal of a person who is inability to work.

Janson’s term of office as the Ombudsman ends in March next year.
