Jannik Sinner, out of the Laureus Prize Nominations List
The Laureus Academy revoked on Thursday the nomination of the world leader in men's tennis, the Italian Jannik Sinner, for the award of the athlete of the year in the world, referring to his three -month suspension for dopage.
Jannik Sinner, who accepted this month the suspension, was positively tested twice within eight days, in March 2024. Traces of Clostebol, an anabolic, were detected in his urine samples during the respective controls, according to AFP. The athlete motivated that the anabolic agent entered his system through physiotherapy and massage. The suspension will end on May 4.
« We followed this case, the decisions of the relevant organisms and, taking into account the mitigating circumstances involved, we feel that the three-month suspension makes the uneligible nomination, » said the president of the Laureus Academy, Sean Fitzpatrick, in a letter referring to the nomination to the members of the panel dedicated to the prize.
« Jannik Sinner and his team were informed, » according to the mentioned document.
The Laureus prizes in world sport are awarded since 2000, with nominations chosen by the global media, recognizing the achievements at the individual level and at the team level. The nominations for this year's prizes will be announced on March 3 in Madrid.
