Jankovic can be an advisor to the Belgrade Expa

The Commission for the Prevention of Corruption (CCP), after receiving an application for a permit to carry out another activity, decided that the mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Jankovic He can perform the work of an advisor at the EXPO World Exhibition Program Committee, which will be hosted in Belgrade in 2027 by Serbia. However, Mayor Jankovic must comply with the conditions and restrictions defined by the commission in the permit, the CCP said.

The role of Mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Jankovic, was received at the CCP in April. In the context of the circumstances, they examined the documentation and for the view of whether the participation of the mayor of Ljubljana at such an event could be in the public interest or represent the interests of the Republic of Slovenia, also asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Economy. However, the ministries did not identify the ministries, the commission said. It should be recalled that Mayor Jankovic recently claimed that he would perform the function of a counselor at the World Exhibition in Belgrade for free and that he would first ask the CCP for his opinion.

How did they judge on the CCP

« The Commission therefore assessed whether the legal conditions for the issuance of the permit in accordance with the Integrity and Corruption Act were fulfilled, and whether the pursuit of this activity could affect the objective and impartial performance of the mayor of the capital or threaten its integrity. »

Given the past practice of participating in the country’s representatives at such events, the commission did not identify such circumstances. Therefore, from 2022 to 2026, Zoran Jankovic issued a permit to perform the work of an advisor on the Program Committee of the World Exhibition of Expo from 2022 to 2026.

And what are the restrictions?

In accordance with the Law on Integrity and Prevention of Corruption of the CCP, it has set some conditions and restrictions that the official must respect when performing additional activities. The CCP has stipulated that the substantive and timing of the performance of this work should not affect the public function of the mayor. In the context of the pursuit of this additional activity, Mayor Jankovic must refrain from any actions that may affect the objective and impartial performance of his mayor’s function or which could endanger her integrity.

Also, for the implementation of additional activity, the mayor may not use municipal funds, both financial and spatial and personnel and material. « However, the permit shall cease to take effect if the Slovenian government or other state body decides that participation in the World Exhibition of the EXPO, which Serbia will host in Belgrade in 2027, or any participation in its organization is not in accordance with the public interest, » they wrote at the CCP.
