James Foley, eclectic director of « House of Cards » and « Fifty Nuances », died at 71 years old – Liberation
James Foley, the director of two of the movies in the trilogy Fifty shades of Graydied at the age of 71, announced his agent on Thursday, May 8. The filmmaker is dead « Peacely in his sleep at the start of the week » at his home in Los Angeles, after a « Fight for several years » against a brain cancerreports the agent.
James Foley is also known to have made 12 episodes of House of Cards – The thriller featuring Kevin Spacey and one of Netflix’s first successes -, as well as series episodes such as Twin Peaks,, Billions And Hannibal.
The director, born on December 28, 1953 in Brooklyn of a housewife and a lawyer father, also took care of three musical clips of Madonna in the 80s: PAPA DON’T PREACH,, Live to Tell And True Bluebefore collaborating again with the singer for the film Who’s that girlin which Madonna plays the role of a woman wrongly accused of the murder of her boyfriend.
The filmmaker launched his career in the 80s by making his first film, Recklessa drama telling a love story between a rebellious American football player and biker (Aidan Quinn) and a cheerleader (Daryl Hannah). There is really a name in the film industry a few years later with the release of GLENGARRY GLEN ROSSan adaptation of the play by David Mamet, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, which tells the story of real estate sellers who try to reach both ends in a difficult economic context. The film, released in 1992, has a prestigious distribution including Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin and Kevin Spacey.
James Foley then signs Deadly obsession (1996) with Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon,, The inheritance of hatred (1996), with Chris O’Donnell and Gene Hackman or Dangerous seduction (2007), with Bruce Willis and Halle Berry.
In an interview granted At Hollywood Reporter in 2017James Foley explained that he was happy not to have been cataloged as a filmmaker, reports the New York Times. « I think in terms of what fascinates me and what intrigues me and what I find engaging for the year that you spend the film (…) without adhering to any kind of convention »he explained.
