Jaan Toots: « I want to continue my undertakings, because I politically like Narva »

Jaan Toots was the Narva mayor since October 5, 2023, when Katri Raik was replaced in this place. He stayed as mayor of Narva until December 28, 2024. Archive « NG »

The former mayor of the city of Jaan Toots will again run for the Narva City Board. In the elections in October this year, he will head the list of the Center Party, as he believes that many projects that were started during his leadership of the city remained incomplete.

For example, the construction in the city of a large hotel, the new building of the hospital and the house of care. And also, Toots says, he does not mind taking the mayor’s post again.

– Yaan, why did you decide to run in Narva, and not in Tartu?

– Because here I worked as a mayor, and many things remained half done. Our faction wants to come back so that you can continue its activities in Narva. In my opinion, now everything is standing still. I do not see any undertakings. So far, it is still far from the elections, and it is too early to talk about specific actions, but many projects remained incomplete, since my resignation happened very sharply. I want to come to the polls again and see how much people trust me. We will find out in October.

“I want to come to the polls again and see how much people trust me. We will find out in October.

– What conclusions did you make as a mayor: are there any ideas that you need to continue or change in the policy of the city?

– During my work, we started a large number of important projects, I already talked about many of them. Just recently, the first new residential building has been completed over the past few decades. The design of a new therapeutic building for the Narva Hospital continues (this process began at Katri Raik, but we actively supported it), I am sure that the new hospital will be built, although the competition and construction will take some time. And in Narva they will open a new hotel with so many places, which today is in all hotels of the city combined, because now accommodation for tourists is not enough. I am in the commission for the design of this hotel and participate in the creation of its strategy. Also, when I was the mayor, we began the project for building a house of cottage type of 12 houses, with me a competition was held to choose a construction company, the construction should already begin. This is far from all the questions that I oversee the mayor’s post, but I like that there is still a lot of work in Narva. Therefore, in the Board of the Centers, where I am the vice-chairman, they decided that I would run for Narva.

-The presence of your own housing in Narva somehow influenced your choice?

– I have a lot of real estate, but in Narva I already wanted to buy an apartment back in 2019, when they didn’t even start building a new house. Construction was delayed because of Covid and War, but when I became the mayor, they still began to build the house. The presence of an apartment did not play the main role when making a decision to bargain in the Narva City Board, but this is a big plus: now I have my own housing, do not rent an apartment or live in a hotel. This is a positive nuance, but the main thing is that I want to continue my undertakings, because politically I like Narva.

“Would you like to take the mayor of the city again?”

– This is how the people decide, how much our party will gain votes. Of course, if there is such an opportunity, I would gladly take this post. I see in Narva great potential for development, I want to continue what has been started, as well as promote new initiatives. I am coming from the party with the first number on the list, this implies that I will be a candidate for mayor. But the last word, of course, is behind the inhabitants of Narva.

Our certificate:

Jaan Toots has a significant experience of political activity, for a long time he worked in the law enforcement authorities, was deputy police general and the office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and also showed himself as an entrepreneur; He was a member in the Executive Committee of the Olympic Committee, led the Estonian Union of cycling. Toots ran for Riigikoga several times, but gained too few voices to become a deputy of the parliament. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Center Party.
