Iwiw started 23 years ago

The predecessor of iwiw was Wiwwhich resulted in the WHO IS WHO (who is), and this was made to the beginning in 2005, which denotes the word International (international). In 2002, when it started, it was only a private circle on the basis of an invitation system, but anyone could register later.

The test version was created in 2002 by Zsolt Várady, a web developer, for whom it was important for the IWIW to not be covered by advertising like other websites.

« I was originally thinking in a small -scale – if possible – in a friendly business that cares that people could not bake the stamp of profit maximization. I did not allow ads on the site, rather I would have made the money needed to operate by launching alternative business, but it would not work very quickly. Money was needed «  Or betrayed me a few years ago Blikk Várady, who received an E-Hungary Award for the development of the community site.

2005 came the change

On October 10, 2005, the system was renewed and was named IWIW. From here on, commercials have already appeared on the site, but they have made many good developments: the site worked in several languages, we could group our acquaintances, upload pictures, expand our profile with more data, and talk to open forums.

As a result, more and more people were registered, by March 2006, more than half a million users, and due to increasing traffic, more and more restrictions were introduced, and in April it was bought by Magyar Telekom for nearly one billion forints, and two years later, Origo Media and Communication Service Ltd.

By this time, the number of users had already exceeded 930,000, and on May 4, the site set a record for attendance, with 443,673 visitors generating 16,107,708 newspapers. This prevented the most popular pages, the Start Leaf and the Index. It is important to note, however, that this is due to a chain letter in which (false) claimed to the reader that if he did not send it to at least 50 persons, his account is classified as inactive. The number of users reached one million in July 2006 and exceeded one and a half million in December and exceeded 4 million two years later. At that time, IWIW became one of Hungary’s most visited websites, and almost everyone was up: from schoolchildren to grandparents.

However, at the end of 2010, the slope started. From December, Facebook has begun to take over and more and more people have begun to depart from iwiw and have been converted to Facebook. By the summer of 2013, only 120-190,000 users had signed up for the site daily, and on May 15, 2014, Origo announced the sad news that the service would be discontinued. Until June 25, users had time to ask for a digital time capsule to save their data stored on IWIW.

What did you leave?

Iwiw was not only a website, but a symbol of an era. It would be almost impossible to imagine the Hungarian Internet culture of the mid-2000s. Many people still think back to the site with nostalgia, because it is undeniable that IWIW has represented an internet world that was slower, more intimate and more direct.
