Ivan Simonovic on expelled Croats from Serbia: The regime is looking for a suitable external enemy
Ivan Simonovic. Member of the UN Human Rights Committee, for Nova TV daily He commented on Russian attacks on the sum and the escalation of the attack on civilian goals in Ukraine.
– If we recall and we ourselves experienced something similar during the Homeland War during the negotiations, just before the negotiations and during the negotiations, the number of victims grew. This is the pressure to show, if the negotiations are not successfully completed, it could be worse, especially to accept some conditions that would not otherwise be accepted – he said.
He was also asked if the negotiations of Donald Trump about Peace in Ukraine were given any result.
– For now, there is talk of talking. But as for the effects, the results are weak, but let’s stay optimistic – he says.
He also commented on the statement that Trump is more affected by Putin.
– Unfortunately, that impression is not just our impression. We divide it within the EU and this is something we are afraid of ourselves, which is that the conflict solution is required by pressing Ukraine. Of course, in every interruption of the conflict, the concession should be sought from both sides, but this is not a warfare that is a product of a conflict between the two sides, but rather a territorial violation of integrity, and of course little principle must continue to be present, given this pressure to find pragmatic solutions to stop the conflict – he commented.
International institutions are currently completely powerless. Simonovic himself once stated that the UN may be more needed than ever, but also weaker than ever.
– Unfortunately, that is, exactly. This is primarily related to the Security Council where the division between the permanent members of so many is a very small number of questions where there can be a common and decisive action. But there are ways to bypass this action of the Council, at least to some extent through the action of the UN General Assembly. Something I used to advocate for, every time the Council brings veto that it is discussed in the General Assembly and also brings as needed the resolution of the General Assembly. Of course, these resolution is not legally binding, nor is there a possibility of using the force to be realized, but they represent certain political pressure.
The second channel of action is the International Court of Justice. We have more and more cases before the court dealing with cases related to the issue of human rights, with climate, not just traditional issues such as the borders dealing with the International Court of Justice. The lateral channels are sought when the main channel of the Security Council does not do its job, which we can attribute primarily to permanent members – he says.
17 Croats who live in Serbia for years received a release from that country – the authorities say are a safety threat. Some only for posting on social networks.
– I think these Croats are tragic collateral victims. It is obvious that the regime is looking for an eligible external enemy to mobilize support, and who is a suitable external enemy than the neighboring country with whom you have recently fought.
In my impression, the generations that were involved in these protests are not fooled and cannot be deceived by such propaganda – comments.
Simonovic also answered the question to whom these people can still address if the institutions do not answer their favor.
– I believe that we will have cases before the European Human Rights Court AI UN Committee on Human Rights, but it all lasts, because the rule is to exhaust all possibilities in domestic courts, and that is unfortunately going on – he said.
