Black flag against « exploitation of the glacier areas ».

The respected Italian environmental protection association Legambiet criticizes Austria’s skiing industry. The Association of Austria gave a black flag for « the relentless endeavor to expand the ski areas in Tyrol by the exploitation of the last remaining glacier areas in the Eastern Alps ».

« We denounce the uncolicological practices in the mountains, also in neighboring Austria, » emphasized Legambient General Director Giorgio Zampetti in a press release on Saturday.

The association distinguishes the Italian regions with green flags every year. They are awarded to mountain locations that have been recognized by the implementation of projects in connection with sustainability and nature conservation. Black flags are awarded to communities that do too little for environmental protection.

19 green flags in Italy awarded

In 2025, Legambience awarded 19 green flags to different regions and places in the Italian Alpine region. Among the Italian regions with the most green flags are Piedmont and Friuli-Julisch Veneto at the top of the list of four green flags each. Three green flags went to the Lombardy and Veneto. The Trentino with two flags, South Tyrol, the Aostatal and Liguria follows with one.

On the other hand, nine black flags were awarded at towns in the Alpine region, which maintain a non -sustainable handling of the mountains. Friuli-Julian Veneto is the region with the most black flags (3), followed by Piedmont, Aostatal, Trentino, South Tyrol and Veneto, each of which has received a black flag. (APA)
