Italy brings rejected asylum seekers to Albania for the first time

Most migrants didn’t know what happened to them: they were awakened in their cells in the night from Thursday to Friday, tied up with handcuffs and shipped to the southern Italian port city of Brindisi. It was only at the harbor that they would now be brought to the Italian deportation camps of Albania – and so it was.

With the naval ship Libra they were brought to the port of Shengjin and from there to Gjad’s deportation camp, about 20 kilometers away. According to the Italian media, the deportation sings moved by the Italian authorities are migrants from Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Georgia and Moldova.

Before moving to Albania, the forty migrants had been interned across Italy in various deportation bearings. Several of them had been punished: five were convicted of sexual offenses, one for attempted murder, others for theft, other property crimes and resistance to state power.

Others had not come into conflict with the law before, but in common everyone is that they have no residence permit in Italy and received an exit command. Now they are to be deported from Albania to their countries of origin within a maximum of 18 months.

Previous attempts at internment of courts stopped

The relocation – the Italian opposition calls it deportation – the forty migrant from Italy to Albania is already the fourth attempt by the legal government of Giorgia Meloni, the extraterritorial deportation warehouse that the Italian taxpayers have already cost around one billion euros.

The two centers are the result of a bilateral migration agreement between Rome and Tirana and have existed since autumn 2024. So far, all three attempts from the government have to bring asylum seekers to the Albanian deportation warehouse and to undergo an accelerated, a maximum of thirty days of asylum procedure, the opposition of Italian dishes.

With her new attempt to internage migrants in Albania, Meloni partially throws the original purpose of the camp overboard: Originally, the deportation centers were intended exclusively for male boat refugees from safe countries of origin without prospect of a positive asylum notice.

In fact, all migrants brought to Albania had previously been intercepted to the extraterritorial warehouse from the Italian coast guard on the open lake and brought without detour via Italy. The government’s goal was that they would never set foot on Italian soil. The new “guests” of the camps, on the other hand, are only people who have already been in Italy.

Human rights concerns about Albanian camps

The new purpose of the camps was made possible by a decree that the government in Rome decided on March 28. It remains to be seen for the time being whether the change in use was discussed with the Albanian government and whether it will withstand a review by Italian dishes.

With her new attempt to internage migrants in Albania, Meloni partially throws the original purpose of the camps overboard.

The Social Democratic Italian European Parliamentarian Cecilia Strada criticized the bondage of those affected and the fact that they had so far been refused to contact her lawyers. The interned are desperate; There have already been three self -injuries.

Strada’s party colleague Alessandro Zan asked Prime Minister Meloni to « give up her friend Donald Trump and admit the failure of the Albania model ».
