It is not yet known who will prepare the virtue program, but it will be ready by the fall
The working groups that have to prepare the curricula for virtues and ethics must include representatives from different fields. There is currently no composition of the working group, but next week it will be ready and will be open to additions. This was stated by the Minister of Education Krasimir Valchev in presenting the concept of the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) for the study of the subject of virtues and religions in response to a question of « Diary » what specialists the programs will prepare and whether representatives of the Holy Synod have.
The minister explained that in the preparation of previous religion programs in the working groups, specialists from the Theological Faculties participated in the working groups. « I personally think that there should be more pluralism inside, to hear more votes, because we can use this curriculum, this school hour to address a number of competences and a number of values, » the minister said.
The Minister presented a concept for the subject « Virtues and Religions » – the Virtue and Ethics Program. This will be the profile that parents will be able to choose if they do not want their children to study the other two programs – Christianity – Orthodoxy and Islam. According to him, the concept will serve as the basis for the preparation of the future curriculum, and according to its forecasts it can be ready this fall.
The ministry plans to introduce the subject « virtues and religions » from the 2026/2027 school year after amendments to the Law on Preschool and School Education. Religion training will start first for first grade students with one hour a week. So far, Valchev has mainly highlighted two arguments to defend his idea:
- The education system should make children not only knowledgeable but also good people
- The subject will reduce aggression at school.
