Philip D. (64), the former director of ‘sailor school’ Royal Work Ibis in Bredene, has been sentenced to four years in prison with postponement. Initially he had been in prison with a delay, but the public prosecutor thought that was too mild.

Philip D. from Ostend has been the head of the ‘sailor school’ Royal Work in Bredene since 1996. But D. turned out to be a double life for about ten years. « Ten hours a day he was the director of the boarding school, he was the family man for five hours, but for four hours he was also ‘Frank’ his sex -addicted bisexual alter ego who spread his wings as bat or vampire on the internet at night, » his lawyer argued. « It felt like a liberation for him, but it grew into a hopeless addiction. »

Numerous objections were found on D.’s computer. Based on further research, about twenty boys could be identified with whom D., spread over a period of ten years, had sex dates. The encounters often took place in the country residence of the 65-year-old Zoerselaar, Daniel W., in De Haan. But dates were also arranged on the beach. In some cases, the duo the boys, who were minors at the time of the facts, would also have paid. A few victims would have been barely fifteen years old. Without the boys knew, they were also filmed by D. and his companion during the encounters. Afterwards they sent the images to others.

Stricter punishment in appeal

In the first instance they both had two years in prison with a delay, but the public prosecutor thought that was too mild a punishment. « It was a video library system of images of sexual child abuse, » said the attorney who progressed for both for four years for both. An advice that the court followed. Both now receive four years in prison with deferment, provided that it is complying with conditions, and a fine of 4,000 euros.
