‘It can hurt the heart and kidneys’
In a video that has already been viewed over 52,000 times, Dr. Ahmed his concern about the increasing number of people he has seen ingesting extremely high doses of vitamin D.
And common to all of them is that it is often based on the advice of the Internet.
« I’ve seen people take crazy high doses. It’s a dose I would never recommend to anyone, » the doctor says.
According to Dr. Ahmed is particularly dangerous to take large amounts of vitamin D because it is fat-soluble.
This means that the body cannot easily secrete the excess, which instead accumulates and can lead to hypercalcemia – a condition where too much lime in the blood increases the risk of damage to both heart and kidneys.
Vitamin D is found naturally in sunlight and certain foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks and liver.
The National Board of Health recommends that all children over the age of 4 and adults take a daily supplement of 5-10 µg of vitamin D in the winter season. Still, the need can vary individually.
« The correct dose depends on factors such as symptoms, ethnicity, skin type and the results of your blood tests, » he explains.
Dr. Ahmed, who has over 95,000 followers on Instagram, therefore encourages everyone who takes vitamin D supplementation to measure their level and take grants wisely.
« It’s about taking it responsibly and not exaggerating, » he concludes.
