Israel’s government votes for the dismissal of General Prosecutor
The Israeli government has spoken out for the dismissal of General Prosecutor Gali Baharav-Meara. According to media reports, the ministers unanimously approved the controversial step in their absence, and was given a lack of trust. However, the decision is only the beginning of a longer process, a special committee must now continue to deal with the topic. During the government meeting, thousands of people against Baharav-Meara’s discharge demonstrated in Jerusalem.
The Attorney General had published a letter before the meeting, in which it was said: « The government wants to stand above the right, we will not be put off. » The government wants to demand loyalty from legal experts to the political top. Other legal experts in Israel had also warned that the dismissal of Baharav-Meara endangers democracy in the country.
