Israel’s attack is a serious problem for global air traffic
On Friday morning (June 13), Israel attacked dozens of military goals in Iran, which was to be a response to the Tehran nuclear program. Iran answered the drones. As a result, both sides, as well as Iraq and Jordan, closed their airspace. The airlines were forced to immediately redirect flights – many machines flying over Iraq were directed to Central Asia or Saudi Arabia.
Israel attacked Iran. Experts with consequences
Significant difficulties were affected by one of the most burdened air corridors in the world, running over Eastern Iraq and used in flights from Europe to the Persian Gulf.
In connection with the Israeli attack on Iran, many lines also hung flights to Tel Aviv. Ben Gurion’s airport was closed in Israel itself. In turn, El Al, an Israeli national carrier, evacuated its planes outside the country.
Dominik Sipiński, an aviation market expert from the CH-AVIATION company, estimates that the effects of the conflict are both operationalWhat market.
– Operatingly closing the airspace over Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Israel is a huge problem for a whole range of lines, although it is hard to say now how long the difficulties will last. The worst in the situation are lines from these countries – says Sipiński. A particularly difficult situation applies to Royal Jordanian, whose planes cannot return to Amman, despite the fact that Jordan is not a party to the conflict.
According to the expert, the ban on flights through Iran, Iraq or Jordan affects cruises to Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia countries. This also applies to Air India, which had already had to avoid Pakistan. For passengers from Europe it means longer travelsespecially through the main interchange nodes in Dubai or dosha.
Lot with limited influence, but the problem is the Israeli market
Sipiński indicates that for PLL LOT the biggest problem is not transit routes – please the carrier does not use the Iranian airspace – but restrictions on the Israeli market.
– From the beginning of the conflict in gas, lines from abroad are exposed to continuous changes. Israeli lines that do not cancel flights and have state support dominate the market – he notes.
In his opinion, for European and American carriers, the key problem is the unpredictability of the situation. – Lack of stability prevents strategic planning. Frequent changes in schedule and suspension of connections also hit transfers, e.g. between Europe and the USA – he adds.
On the Flightradar24 recording below you can see flights bypassing Iran and Iraq after closing the airspace of both countries.
Rising costs, more expensive tickets
According to Mariusz Piotrowski, the Fly4Free.pl portal also has the conflict financial dimension. – In the long run it is bad information for airlines and passengers, which can already be seen in rising oil priceswhich will translate into Aviation fuel price – says in an interview with the Polish Press Agency.
In his opinion, he will suffer too tourismespecially in Israel and Jordanwhich has been very popular in recent years. – Increased tension already negatively affects the tourist traffic in this country. Perhaps this will affect the decisions of the carriers themselves to allocate their slots, which can make there less connections to Jordan – assesses the expert.
Disturbances at airports and redirects
Airlines were immediate. Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines redirected their flights to Baku, while Emirates changed the route from Manchester to Dubai, directing him to Istanbul. Flydubai directed a connection from Belgrade to Yerevan, and Qatar Airways decided to cancel flights to Damascus.
Air India She redirected or turned back several cruises, including New York, Vancouver, Chicago and London. Cypriot airports have adopted a total of 32 aircraft from the Middle East, which changed the route. The Turkish lines Pegasus and Ajet suspended connections to Iran, Iraq and Jordan, while Greek carriers canceled all flights to Tel Aviv. The Russian Aerofłot suspended route service to Iran and introduces changes to flights in the region.
LOT: Connections to Asia unchanged
LOT Polish airlines They reported that they do not use Iran airs during cruises to Asia, which is why all connections, including India, are being implemented According to the schedule.
