Israel wants to extend cease-fire by six weeks

Israel wants to extend the ceasefire with Hamas by six weeks. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this on Saturday evening. As a result, during Ramadan and the Jewish holiday, among other things, Passover would be a ceasefire. The proposed extension is a proposal from Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for the Middle East of the US, and has been taken over by Israel. Hamas has not yet responded.

The first phase of the file between Israel and Hamas ended on Saturday. During this phase, Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners were exchanged. Humanitarian aid was also admitted to Gaza and Israeli troops withdrew partially.

Hamas wanted to go to phase two of the file, where agreements would be made about a permanent truce, the release of more hostages and the departure of Israeli soldiers from Gaza. For the time being, Israel seems to be aiming for an extension of the current ceasefire instead of taking the step to phase two.

According to the American proposal, half of the 59 prisoners, who are still being held in Gaza and part of which died, are transferred to Israel during that extension. At the end of the six weeks, negotiations must be made on a permanent ceasefire and the release of the rest of the prisoners.
