Israel deleted the condolences for the pope’s death
The Israeli government shared and then deleted a post on the social network in which it offered condolences for Pope Francis’s death, notes Reuters.
The authorities did not specify the reason, but an Israeli newspaper linked the decision to criticize the deceased Pontiff to the war in Gaza.
The verified account @israel posted a message on the social platform X on Monday: « Rest in peace, Pope Francis. May his memory be a blessing, » along with an image of the Pope visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Post quoted officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying that the Pope made « statements against Israel » and that posting on social networks was published « in error ».
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, about which the social platform X states on its site that it is related to the verified account @israel, did not respond immediately to a Reuters comment request.
Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88, suggested in November last year that the global community should study if the military campaign of Israel in Gaza is a genocide of the Palestinian people, in some of its most explicit critics to Israel’s behavior in his war with Hamas, which started in October 2023.
