Isobel Hadley-Kamptz: Biological Sex is much more exciting than trans critics understand
The other week, Britain’s Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman must be based on the biological gender. The question had been driven to court by the rocky Harry Potter writer JK Rowling. Afterwards, Rowling was seen celebrating with a cigar on a South Sea island, and cultural warriors who see transgender people as the great threat of our time were delighted with her.
The British Equality Authority has already come up with guidelines for how the judgment should be interpreted. Specifically, it affects discrimination legislation and deals with workplaces, schools and hospitals but also shops, restaurants and the entire association life.
In all these places, private or publicly driven, you must now stop transgender people from gender -separate contexts. If you have gender -divided toilets or changing rooms, trans women should go on the men’s. If you arrange a girl’s evening at your pub, you must not let crane girls in.
