The designated Greens boss Leonore Gewessler wants to « listen » again and « show » clear edge against Islamist propaganda. The Lobau tunnel would be « the worst solution », but not a condition for red-green in Vienna.

The press: Ms. Gewessler, you live here in the Grätzl around the fountain market. Does it feel differently than Greens boss in Spe?

Leonore Gewessler: I am Leonore, 47, Styrian Ottakringerin and now go over the fountain market just like three days ago. But were the past few days special? Yes, of couse.

At their press conference, they said that Werner Kogler’s footsteps were « huge ». Why do you think you are suitable to kick them?

This is nothing that you make lightly. But with such difficult decisions, I often think of my two nieces. I am driven to ensure that if you are as old as I am, you can also live safely and happily. If you are looking at the world, then the discouragement could attack you. On the one hand Putin, on the other side Trump. The world is out of joint. But nothing changes. That’s why I want to tackle. If the two ask me in 20 years, I would like to say that I did everything in my power.

You are a political career. In contrast to professional politicians, what qualities do you bring with you?

Werner Kogler opened the door for me at the time, and for that I am infinitely grateful to him. And yes, I step in huge footsteps because the Werner is a really big greener. I do not say that from the first day I can only fill it. But I have shown in the past few years that you can rely on me and that I don’t let the headwind blown. And that I am making politics with a conviction. I am stable. I can listen well. And I like the Greens.

Your ex-coalition partner ÖVP would possibly attribute Machiavellist features to you. As a minister, you acted in many matters regardless of you. Where did you learn to act so politically?

« It often depends less on which armchair you are sitting on, but that you tackle and fleet, » says Leonore Gewessler about her new role in the opposition.Jana Madzigon

I now take the example of plastic deposit. That was a difficult project on many levels. You have to build bridges to many actors and stretch out your hand. And I did that. If you go into politics, and that was my drive, then you do it out of a conviction that you want to improve something. But that will only work if you manage to develop sustainable solutions, even with people who see it very differently.
