Is there enough police to monitor German borders? – The world

From the beginning of May, Germany monitors its land boundaries due to illegal migration. The police complain to have too much work, but their boss and the competent minister do not want to hear about it.

For about three weeks, increased controls are valid in German state borders. Many police officers, according to one survey, feel overloaded. In Germany, it is the border control, next to other tasks, under the jurisdiction of the Federal Police.

But as officers complain, their president Deter Roman doesn’t even want to hear that his men are overwhelmed. He is generally satisfied with the effects of increased controls on all German terrestrial borders. In the statement for Bild am Zontag, he dismissed the criticism of the police union:

« Why the Federal Police today, with about 56,000 employees, could not do what we have previously succeeded with 10,000 or 30,000 officers? » The commander of their commander wondered.

Despite the criticism that Germany de facto suspends Schengen provisions, he claims that neighboring countries have understandings for German measures and that with them in constant contact. He also says that one foreign colleague said, « Finally! »

Nearly 14,000 police store boundaries

According to the novel, the Federal Police has about 9,800 officials in regular units along national borders. From 16. September 2024 – when temporary internal border controls on all nine land boundaries were reintroduced – that regular service was reinforced with almost 1,200 additional officials.

Currently, between 13,000 and 14,000 members of that police are engaged at the borders. Customizations from other locations, such as railway stations, are also noted for border controls, for which federal police are also competent.

In support of the supervision of the border, police requested assistance from the customs service – although its competence is completely different in Germany, until the worker’s control without valid work permits. Also, Customs is not within the competence of the Ministry of the Interior, but the Ministry of Finance, which the DPA announced that « that is currently being considered ».

The union complains

Unlike the president, the police union has a different situation assessment: members of the federal police at the border are working under extreme effort. This threshold « not only has been reached, but in many a long time ago, » said the newspaper Rajniša Post Andreas Roscope, the president of the police union (GDP) for the Federal Police.

In the Syndicate Survey, in which about 2,000 police officers participated, about 70 percent stated that border controls « are not sustainable. » Nearly 77 percent of respondents strictly opposes the restriction of the right to vacation and leisure.

ROSCOF said: « Now a clear message of supporting the field officials need a clear message. » He believes that German Minister of Interior Alexander Dobrint (CSU) is obliged to provide several staff, but better planning, less pressure, better equipment and infrastructure.

Minister satisfied

Dobrint was last Friday (30. Maya) during the visit to the Czech Republic that border controls represent the « additional burden » for the police. However, it clearly put it to know that they are necessary to reduce the « strong incentive for someone to embark on illegal migration ».

A few hours after the entry on the duty in early May, Dobrint ordered increased border controls. At the same time, he ordered that asylum seekers can be refused already at the border – the opposition and neighboring countries have criticized. In the opinion of the Minister, measures already give results.

« There is no problem at German limits, » Hard Dobrint. He doesn’t want, he says, to burden the neighbors of Germany too much. « But our neighbors have to finally realize that Germany is no longer ready to continue their migration policy from recent years, » said new interior minister.

From the beginning of increased border control 8. May, 3,387 illegal entries were recorded on all terrestrial borders. Germany refused 2,613 migrants. Of the 160 people requested asylum, 125 was rejected already at the border because Germany was not the first EU country in which they entered. The remaining 35 was bold to enter, but only because they were sick or accompanied by children.
