Is it cancer or ordinary? Learn the crucial signs of your mother marks

In the older population, plate cell cancer more often emerges. It thrives on sunny areas such as ice, ears and back. Here it often begins as a rough spot or a tender bud and – unlike basal cell cancer – can actually spread to the rest of the body if not operated away.

Another guest in the sun is actinic keratoses. They are technically not cancer, but potential precursors. They appear as reddish spots that itch, sting or scales, and typically emerge with those who have lived a life with a lot of UV exposure. They are often treated preventively – precisely because they can develop into squamous cell cancer.

Pigment spots-also called Lentigo Solaris-are, on the other hand, innocent sun-souvenirs. They can be small, flat and light brown or cover larger areas, typically on the hands, neck or chest. They are generally cosmetic and not dangerous, but testify to the sun’s wear on the skin over time.

Ordinary mother marks – the classic fists – are rarely problematic. But if they start to itch, soft or change appearance, you should have them evaluated. The same goes for marks that suddenly appear out of the blue.

Skin cancer does not necessarily require many years in tropical heating. A Danish summer and a life without sunscreen can be enough. The tale of the skin is written in UV rays-and it pays to be able to read between the lines.
