Iran and the USA want to continue nuclear discussions after the first meeting

Iran is currently experiencing a change of feelings. After the US President of the Islamic Republic threatened massive bombing a week ago, according to Donald Trump, « the situation in Iran (suddenly) developed quite well ».

The reason for the change in opinion is apparently the course of the discussions about Tehran’s nuclear program described on Saturday in Oman. These are to be continued “somewhere in Europe” next week. Switzerland is named as a place of negotiation, which has been representing the interests of the United States in Iran for more than 40 years.

The United States, represented by its special ambassador Steve Witkoff, and Iran, who had sent his Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi into Oman, should then negotiate with each other directly.

Creation of the Iranian nuclear program not yet an issue

In the Omani capital Muscat, the two diplomats had only met for a direct polite discussion that lasted ten minutes. Previously, four separate discussions took place, in which the Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi commuted between the rooms of the delegations in order to exchange ideas recorded in writing.

According to information from the « New York Times », which refers to high-ranking US officials, Trump’s special ambassador Witkoff in Muscat is not said to have requested the full task of his (well-advanced) nuclear enrichment program. Instead, he focused on the fact that the existing material cannot be used for weapons.

Today we got very close to the basis for negotiations.

Witkoff, also report Iranian diplomats, « did not mention the dismantling of the Iranian nuclear program » in his first draft negotiation. There was also no question of an express threat of a military strike in the event of a failure of the negotiations.

If this is true, the United States has already met the most important conditions for Iran for continuing the nuclear discussions. If Washington had insisted on the complete disassembly of the Iranian nuclear program – which was also expressly requested from Israel, as was done in Libya in the early year, the negotiations would have failed in Oman.

It was therefore no wonder that the Iranian Foreign Minister was very pleased with the outcome of the first round of talks with the long -time arch enemy: « Today we came very close to the basis for negotiation, » said Araghchi in Muscat on Saturday.

Further negotiations could take place in Geneva

On the other hand, Israel reacted not very enthusiastically to the supposedly “very positive” course of the nuclear discussions. « The Iranians are all too happy to drive a wedge between Israel and the United States, » said Dan Diker, President of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs. The conversations in Muscat are nothing more than « the continuation of their long -term war of deception ».

As the London news portal « Amwaj Media » reported at the weekend, the nuclear discussions between Iran and the USA will continue next Saturday. « However, the two delegations would not meet in Muscat, but would meet somewhere in Europe, » reported the portal, as a serious portal, citing political sources in the region. The reason for the laying is « logistical considerations ».

Washington’s trip to Oman is simply too long for the American delegation. Switzerland, which has represented the interests of the USA in Iran for more than 40 years, was mentioned as a possible place of negotiation.

Just two weeks ago, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Ambassador had ordered the Swiss ambassador to protest against the threats of attack by US President-should there be no new nuclear deal with Iran.
