Nurses are the most numerous professional group in healthcare. There are about 4 million in Europe. There are 300,000 in Spain, and they would need another 100,000. There are 20 million worldwide, and according to some studies, they would need 10 million more. In Slovenia, there are more than 23,000 nurses, midwives, medical technicians, paramedics – caregivers. However, they would need an additional 2000 to 3000.

Closed hospital wards, unoccupied bedding in homes for the elderly and postponed or canceled health care, which occurs due to lack of staff of nursing, prove that political decision makers still turn their eyes on the indispensable role of nurses in health and social care. Various organizations, professional associations, trade unions, chambers have been warning for 20 years that the state should take appropriate measures that would attract young people to this profession and to preserve those who work in this profession, which many say is a mission. For those who want free weekends and holidays, this profession is not.

Wages are important, but even more important are the working conditions. They see a lot of sense in the work, but due to bad conditions, they were leaving, two years ago they showed the results of a long -term professions study in long -term care, which also included secondary and graduated nurses. In a study of working conditions in nursing, three years ago, nurses have poorly assessed opportunities for professional development and professional advancement and the readiness of the management of healthcare facilities to listen to employees’ problems. They also evaluated the readiness of doctors to recognize their professionalism and contribution to patient health care.

Despite all the difficulties, according to Valicon’s study, the nurse is among the most trusted professions. From Brussels, however, comes from information that imports of workforce from India, Pakistan, Philippines have brought a zero proceeds, since a lot of supplementary education is needed. By simplifying education, they would reduce the criteria in nursing, which should not happen, the choir warns. Therefore, it should be invested mainly in its own workforce. Quick and effective measures are required. The first of them should be the adoption of new staff standards and norms in nursing, the current ones are more than 40 years old.

Also, the motto on the occasion of today’s International Nurses Day of our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses Strengthens Social Welfare, points to the importance of investing in nursing. Last but not least, the work of nurses who are satisfied and are the first contact with patients, the long -term effects on population health and economic growth.
