Interview with Putin takes scary turn: brings nuclear weapons on the field
Nuclear weapons have for decades been the world’s most feared threat – and for good reason. Few weapons possess such a devastating force that they can threaten the existence of civilization itself.
With the war in Ukraine as a backdrop, the fear of Russia being able to use them has become more present than for many years.
On Russian state TV, there were recently comments from President Vladimir Putin, who once again pulled the gloomy perspectives in the light. Under a longer tribute feature entitled « Russia, Kremlin, Putin, 25 years », the president entered the country’s nuclear arsenal.
« There has been no reason to use those weapons … and I hope they won’t be needed, » Putin said according to The Guardian.
The atomic doctrine has been tightened
Since November 2024, Russia has had a new version of its nuclear weapons in place. The changes give Putin wider powers to use nuclear weapons – not only in response to a nuclear attack, but also by a conventional military attack on Russia.
The United States already took the situation so seriously in the fall of 2022 that Washington warned Moscow directly about the consequences of the possible use of nuclear weapons. Also China’s President Xi Jinping then moved out with a warning to his Russian colleague.
