International Museum Day: Free Entrance to all museums in the country – Many people in the Acropolis
International Museum Day was established in 1977 by the International Museum Council (ICOM) and is celebrated every year on May 18th. This day is a nice occasion to discover places where culture and history come to life through art and creation.
Museums and societies in constant change: this year’s message
« Today’s celebration of International Museum Day, on » Museums and Societies in Constant Change « , gives us the opportunity to discuss the role of museums today. In the modern world, museums play a complex and demanding social role. To respond, they must evolve with society, responding to its needs, « says Culture Minister Lina Mendoni in today’s message.
26 new or renovated museums
« The Ministry of Culture, since 2019 to date, has attributed to Greek society 26 new or fully renovated museums. From the National Gallery and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, the Archaeological Museum of « Aretusa » in Chalkida, the timeless Museum of Tilos, the Archaeological Museum in Polygyros and the Museum of the Petralona Cave in Halkidiki, as the Multipurpose Museum in Halkidiki, as the Multipurpose Museum. Chania and Mesara in Crete, the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the archaeological collection of Sami in Kefalonia. «
Today, projects are underway to establish or re -exhibit another 28 museums, with a gradual tradition, from 2025 to 2028.
Finally, the process of preparing and maturing studies for 20 more museums is in full swing, with the leading case of the National Archaeological Museum.
Acropolis Museum
On Sunday, May 18th, the Acropolis Museum reopens from 9am to 8pm with free admission to all exhibitions and restaurant operation.
The day will be marked by the inauguration of the pioneering Allspice Exhibition | Michael Rakowitz & Ancient Cultures, where ancient artifacts from Mesopotamia meet contemporary art in an exciting dialogue that talks about losses, violence and forced movements.
This year’s honor is the Museum of Heracles in Thissio
It is a separate cultural body that combines art, science and education. Since its founding in 2004, it has hosted important exhibitions of great artists, highlighting the timeless relationship between scientific thought and aesthetic creation.
On the afternoon of Sunday, May 18th, the central event of the International Museum Day 2025 will take place for Greece with a large number of officials and the presence of Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni. At 20:00 there will be a music event in collaboration with the National Conservatory.
