Intellectual and literary critic Dimitris Rautopoulos died


Dimitris Rautopoulos, a critic, essayist and journalist, born in Piraeus in 1924, passed away at the age of 101.

The great career of Ratopoulos, who is one of the most important representatives of Marxist criticism in the postwar period, has its roots in the EPON magazine « New Generation » and the EAM newspaper Free Greece.

Together with the writer and critic Costas Kouloufakos, who organized the resistance group « Free Greeks » in 1941 to be arrested and imprisoned in Spoleto, Italy, the resistance poet Tito Patricia, and Porphyry Konidis, well -known literary literary December 1954 until February 1967, when it was closed with the imposition of dictatorship.

Dimitris Rautopoulos: A long career in the country of letters

During the dictatorship (1967-1974), Rautopoulos, who was a founding member of the Writers’ Society, fled to France. In Paris, he attended classes at the École Pratique des Hautes études, worked as an author at the « Robert Dictionary », while participating in the tribute to Temps Modernes magazine for Greece, composing an anthology of texts from authors.

After the Transition, he took over the management of the magazine « Iridanos » and at the same time wrote « Dawn ». Later, he worked in « Afternoon ».

During his course in the literary and journalistic world, he published a variety of critical works: « Ideas and Works » (1965), « Art and Power » (1985), « Critical Literature » (1986), « Pentees » (1987), « Aris Alexandrou: » (2006).

In 1997, Dimitris Rautopoulos was honored with the State-Criticism Award for the work of « Aris Alexander: the exiled ». Nearly a decade later, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in the Department of Philology of the School of Philosophy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

In 2014 he received the Grand Award for all his work, as was the case in 2017, when he was honored with the Kostas and Helen Uranus Foundation’s Student Award of the Academy of Athens.
