Insurance at Tesla rises sharply

Tesla’s cars have always been expensive to insure compared to many other brands. It is usually explained by the fact that the cars are technically advanced, have many expensive components and high performance.

– They are more expensive for the insurance companies to insure simply and then the premium for customers becomes higher, says Åsa Hauer, insurance expert at the comparison site Zmarta.

But lately, something has happened that has received the premiums on Tesla cars to rise even more, according to a compilation the company has made of all the quotations they left to customers during the first quarter of 2025.

The average premium for a full insurance On Tesla Model Y, the most popular model, last year was SEK 2,031 per month. During the first quarter of this year, the same insurance costs on average SEK 4,007 per month, according to the survey. This is an increase of 97 percent.

– It is a little difficult to draw too much conclusions when comparing a year with a quarter. But what we can say is that Tesla stands out, says Åsa Hauer.

If you look at comparable cars like the Volvo Ex30, Volkswagen ID.4, or Skoda Enyaq IV, the increases are between 4 and 12 percent during the same period.

Åsa Hauer cannot Securely respond to what is behind the sharply increased premium on Tesla cars, but think it may have to do with the competitive situation just among companies that insure Tesla cars.

– There are relatively few companies that do it, because of the high risk. So that there is limited competition can be a contributing cause, she says, adding::

– Since then we have also seen that the cars have become targets for increased vandalism globally. It is another risk. You could say that it is a witch brew that makes these cars stand out extra now.

However, it is unclear how widespread the damage is directed at Tesla cars is in Sweden. Neither IF, Folksam nor Trygghansa have noted any increase during the year.

« The type of damage we call ‘damage’, which includes lacquer damage caused by someone else has a downward trend for all car brands. We thus cannot see an increase lately for some of the car brands that our customers have insured with us, » writes Trygghansa’s press contact Cecilia Magnusson.

Another conceivable explanation May be the uncertainty about how much the cars are really worth now. Uncertainty has increased Since the CEO and founder Elon Musk began to show extreme high -high sympathies and interfered in American politics. In the spring, DN has reported on how car shops do not want to bring in the cars for sale and that prices are on the way down.

– As the market value fluctuates, it is difficult to put a real valuation on what the car costs to replace if something happens. All of these uncertainties of an insurance company mean that you take into account the risk, says Åsa Hauer.

Neither the industry organization Svensk Försäkring nor the insurance companies that DN has been in contact with wants to comment on the Tesla premiums specifically. Trygghansa states that they do not see the same drastic changes in their premiums in general, but also does not comment on the Tesla premiums.
