Institute of Macedonian Language « Krste Misirkov » – Skopje marks 80 years since the codification of the Macedonian language

The continuation of the continuous study of the Macedonian language at all levels, the creation of the Corps of the Macedonian language and the great influx of English were allocated as the biggest challenges of today’s event on the occasion of the Day of the Macedonian Language and the 80th anniversary of the codification of the Macedonian standard language, organized by the Macedonian Language Institute.

Prof. Dr. Elena Jovanova-Grujovska, Director of the Institute of Macedonian Language « Krste Misirkov »-Skopje, emphasized that the Institute has promoted and confirms the basic principles of phonetic spelling, representation of grammatical forms and enrichment of the dictionary. She noted that one of the key projects is the Macedonian dialect atlas, whose first Volume was recently announced with financial support from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. At the same time, he announced that the next larger project is the corpus of the Macedonian language.

-Given that all the cards of the Institute are digitized and we have highly expert scientific staff, we are most suitable for creating a corpus of the Macedonian language. Today we seek the support of all relevant factors, especially the MES and the Ministry of Culture and UKIM University, as well as technical and information faculties and other institutions, individuals and socially responsible companies-said Jovanova-Grujovska.

According to Jovanova-Grujovska, except for professional and patriotic preoccupation, the Macedonian language is « our spiritual and cultural wealth, our main identity landmark, our love and our infinite homeland ».

Prof. Dr. Biljana Angelova, Rector of the University « Ss. Cyril and Methodius »-Skopje, emphasized the importance of the legal codification of the Macedonian language as an important stage in its centuries-old development. She emphasized that the alphabet and spelling are basic language documents that represent a concrete realization of codification.

« Today, we also bind us as a leading university to continue the written heritage and nurture and develop the Macedonian language, which is not only our tradition, but also our responsibility, » Angelova said.

Prof. Dr. Iskra Panovska-Dimkova, Head of the Department of Macedonian Language at the Faculty of Philology « Blaze Koneski »-Skopje, in a statement to the media before the event, emphasized the main challenge facing the Macedonian language-the great influx of English.

-The main challenge we are currently facing is a great influx of English that we can hardly deal with because they enter a large number of daily. It affects the structure of the language and is much more dangerous than the surface lexemes that can be replaced-said Panovska-Dimkova.

The event also presented a brief announcement of the documentary film « AZ, Buki, Vedi », made in collaboration with PSU « Yahya Kemal » – Tetovo.

On May 5, 1945, the Macedonian alphabet was also published with a solution to the Macedonian alphabet. The codification of the Macedonian language was made by ASNOM Decision on August 2, 1944. The decision of the People’s Government of Federal Macedonia adopted the alphabet of the Macedonian language, and on June 7 of the same year the spelling of the Macedonian language was adopted. Then are the founder works of the great Macedonian language and science, Blaze Koneski: Grammar of the Macedonian language, the dictionary of the Macedonian language and the history of the Macedonian language, thus rounding the codification of the Macedonian language.
