Initiative to revoke Hungary's right to EU voting right
An initiative to deprive Hungary's voting rights to the European Union is being launched because of what is said to be its constant blocking of joint decisions.
Representatives of the Pan -European Party Walt have prepared a nine -point action plan to send it to EU leaders ahead of an extraordinary summit scheduled for tomorrow.
This is their nine -point plan:
- Activate Article 7 to halt Victor Orban's veto and strengthen the Hungarian opposition. If it is blocked, set up the European Union 2.0.
- Give Kaya Calas authorize foreign policy and impose sanctions on behalf of the EU through an intergovernmental agreement.
- Change the contract immediately: Implement targeted contract changes to add defense. To start a comprehensive contractual convention in preparation for expansion.
- Release EU common debt for multi -year joint procurement, establish a European version of DARPA and specialized regional industrial clusters.
- Victory for Ukraine: Use more than 200 billion euros from frozen Russian assets to defend Ukraine and prepare European security guarantees, such as protecting European skies and sending troops on the ground.
- European Army: To develop an independent European command and control center, to create European strategic capacities and establish a legal basis for the European Armed Forces.
- Radical alignment: Remove obstacles to make it easier for companies to grow within the EU by accelerated law revision and widespread application of « 28th regime ».
- Strengthening trade, technology and defense cooperation through a formal coalition of countries with like -minded people such as the United Kingdom, Norway, Canada and Japan.
- European Technology Infrastructure: Invest in EU Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence, Data and Cloud Storage. Protect public debates and elections by stronger regulation on social networks.
The Pan -European Party Walt cites several reasons why they have launched this initiative: According to them, Hungary has repeatedly blocked EU joint decisions, especially in connection with aid to Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. They criticize the rule of law and democratic standards in Hungary, and they say Prime Minister Viktor Orban's role at the EU Summit in December 2023 is also controversial.
The proposal is based on activation of Article 7 of the European Union Agreement, which allows sanctions against member states that violate the European Union's core values. Hungary is already under the first chapter of Article 7 of 2018, and this proposal can lead to the activation of the second and third phases, which will potentially result in the suspension of the right to vote.
Although this initiative is important, it is important to note that the European Parliament cannot activate the second phase of Article 7 alone. Only one third of the Member States or the European Commission can do so. Therefore, the move primarily serves to take political pressure on the Commission and the Member States to take concrete steps against Hungary.
The European Union often accuses Viktor Orban's government of limiting the independence of the judiciary, media freedom and civil society rights.
After the 2024 European elections, Walt won a total of five places in the European Parliament – two in the Netherlands and three in Germany.
