Inflation of April. Significant increases in food and services
In April 2025, the annual inflation rate settled at 4.9%, compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Tuesday. It reflects a moderate increase compared to April 2024, with a slight lowering of pressures over prices compared to the beginning of the year. Compared to December 2024, inflation was 2.2%, and the average rate of consumption prices for the last 12 months (May 2024 – April 2025) was 5.0%, compared to the similar interval of the previous year (May 2023 – April 2024).
Significant increases in services and food
The biggest impact on inflation was recorded in the services sector, where the prices increased by 6.83%. Price increases were notable in several fields, including train transport, where CFR ticket rates increased by 16.92%. Other factors that have contributed to the increase of prices include water, channel and sanitation services, with an advance of 12.36%, and hygiene and cosmetic services, which have increased by 13.80%. In the car repair sector, the rates increased by 10.51%, and the rent was more expensive by 6.77%. Also, the medical assistance registered an increase of 9.67%, and the urban transport had an increase of 4.86%.
In parallel, food prices continued to climb, with an increase of 5.57%. The largest increases were observed in citrus fruits, which were expensive by 12.30%, and fresh fruits, which had an increase of 12.28%. The edible oil increased by 9.93%, and margarine by 8.41%. Also, alcoholic beverages registered increases, with beer prices increasing by 5.34%, and of wine by 6.13%. The coffee had a 9.26%increase.
Non -food goods and energy
In the category of non -food goods, the most significant increases were registered with thermal energy, which had an increase of 13.63%. Also, books, newspapers and magazines registered an increase of 7.28%, and the fabrics increased by 6.78%. Detergents’ prices increased by 5.86%, and tobacco and cigarettes had a increase of 5.74%. The drugs increased by 3.18%.
On the other hand, several products recorded price drops. The sugar had a decrease of 6.00%, and the potatoes were cheaper by 4.38%. Natural gases decreased by 3.67%, and fuels reduced by 0.18%. Also, the telephone services registered a decrease of 4.75%.
Compared to March 2025
In April 2025, compared to March 2025, consumer prices increased by only 0.07%. Food prices rose by 0.83%, and the services registered an increase of 0.48%. The largest monthly increases in the food sector were registered in citrus fruits, which were expensive by 3.64%, and in fresh fruits, with 3.51%. In the category of services, CFR ticket rates increased by 11.71%, and the air services had a increase of 23.83%.
In contrast, natural gas and fuel prices decreased, by 12.06% in gases and 2.04% in fuels.
