Increased activity call for structure
« Increased operations in the flight and more traffic here on the stadium call for further development here, » says Hermann Jóhannesson, new Isavia district manager in the North. He formally takes on that job on July 1, but is present and started to get into the case. Hermann is an industrial and operating engineer, but a mechanical engineer in the foundation and now comes to work from Lego in Denmark.
At Akureyri Airport, it is lively from morning to evening. Icelandair’s planning machine – the first one on the day – lands just before eight in the morning, but there are a total of four trips and sometimes more on the day’s schedule at the company. Norlandair also has a lot of operations in the area. Flies from Akureyri to Vopnafjörður and Torshavn. Then Grímsey and Nerlerit Inaat, which is close to the Scoresby Channel in Greenland, are not far off and frequent trips there. Likewise, Akureyri is a home port of ambulance that Norlandair has in accordance with agreements with the government. Those as their ambulance are on a 24 -hour watch. It is often necessary to respond quickly, as Akureyri knows well when aircraft material is heard at night.

Connection to foreign countries
Several foreign airlines fly today to and from Akureyri, where the results of marketing work in recent years will come to fruition. It may be suggested that the Dutch airline Voigt Travel flies between Amsterdam and Akureyri once or twice a week. The British company EasyJet flies over the winter from London and Manchester to Akureyri and the Swiss company Edelweiss is on regular trips from and to Zurich. Thousands of tourists take advantage of these trips and the connection to foreign countries is important for tourism in the North.
« The activities here on the field are extensive. Isavia employees here are a total of about 60. Its projects are diverse, such as air traffic control, security search and more. Then Icelandair here is a large group of staff as well as Norlandair.
Response capacity strengthens
It is estimated that one of three Coast Guard helicopters will be located in Akureyri in the future. This was stated in the case of Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, who last week held a morning meeting at the airport, then just arrived by flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri, on the way to Vopnafjörður. It was stated in the Minister’s case that the government had been adopted by increased funding for the detention so that helicopter endurance and crews to the north could be possible. It has been reported that the Coast Guard executives are now examining further implementation.

« I welcome the fact that a helicopter will be located here. This increases security and all the response capacity here, for example in the ocean.
