Increase of complaints against the performance of security forces

General Inspection of Internal Administration (IGAI) received 1,511 complaints against the performance of security forces in 2024, the largest number of the decade. PSP is the most targeted police.

Data from the body that supervises police activity revealed this Friday, report that last year Igai received 1,511 complaints, including 331 certificates sent by the judicial authority.

According to Lusa agency, analyzing the complaints that arrived in Igai between 2014 and 2024 it was concluded that the complaints more than doubled, from 711 to 1,511, reaching last year the highest number of the decade.

Igai advances that PSP is the safety force with the largest number of complaints. Last year 742 appearances were entered against the performance of public security police officers in 2024, 126 more than in 2023.

The military of the Republican National Guard were the target of 527 complaints, 115 more than in 2023.

The body led by Judge Pedro Figueiredo also indicates that complaints against the performance of security forces were related to the violation of conduct duties (procedures or behaviors and incorrect care and refusal of care), offenses to physical integrity and abuse of authority.

Regarding disciplinary proceedings, IGAI data show that nine PSP police and eight GNR military personnel were suspended last year, and a military guard military man was expelled.

In 2024, the body that oversees police activity opened 23 disciplinary proceedings to police, 22 less than in 2023. However, the applied penalties increased, and the suspended police were eight more.

According to Igai, the 23 disciplinary proceedings opened in 2024 originated, for the most part, in situations of alleged offenses to the physical integrity of citizens by elements of GNR or PSP.

Igai’s mission is to carry out audits, inspections and supervision of all entities, services and bodies protected by MAI.
