From 2021 to 2023 the level of episodic use Alcohol (Binge Drinking) among young women in the United States for the first time exceeded the rates among men of the same age.

This is stated in studyPosted in Journal of the American Medical Association, writes Medicalxpress.

Researchers analyzed data 267,843 adults who participated in a national survey on drug use (National Survey on Drug Use and Health) for two periods: 2017-2019 and 2021-2023.

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh wanted to study how gender differences in the frequency of excessive and regular alcohol consumption changed.

In 2017-2019, the indicator of episodic alcohol consumption during the month was much lower in women than in men: 22.6 against 29.2 cases per 100 people. Among young people 18-25, these figures were 36.4 in women against 37.7 in men.

However, in 2021-2023 the picture changed. Although women continued to consume less alcohol than men (21.8 against 25.7 per 100 people), among women aged 18-25, they recorded a higher level of episodic drinking than among men-31.6 against 29.9 per 100 people.

Despite the growth of Binge Dinking among young women, the indicator of severe regular alcohol consumption remains lower in women in all age groups. In 2021-2023 it was 5.0 per 100 people in women and 7.8 in men.

« Given the increase in cases of liver alcohol and mortality among women compared to men, doctors should be carefully screening for excessive alcohol use among young women to reduce health risks in the future »– the authors of the study say.

Reference: binge drinking – It is not daily drinking, but periodic excessive use of alcohol. In the United States, « binge drinks » consider consumption of so much alcohol that increases the concentration of alcohol in the blood to 0.08% and above (5+ standard drinks for men or 4+ standard drinks for women).
