In the shadow of war in Gaza: Anti-Semitism in Germany doubled – the world
Almost 24 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded by the Anti-Semitism Reporting Offices daily during last year in Germany. The main reason for an increase: the war in the gauze belt.
« One Jew, the mother of two, as follows, in the next way ago, in everyday life, in everyday life, said Benjamin Stajnic, the director of the Research and Information on Anti-Semitism (RIAs), when presenting the annual report of that organization Berlin.
Rias’s login offices recorded 8,627 anti-Semitic incidents over last year. This increase of 77% per 2023. The year is worrying: two years ago, there were 13 anti-Semitic incidents a day, while 2024 were almost 24 – almost twice as much. After the terrorist attack of the Palestinian Militant-Islamist Group Hamas to Israel 7. October 2023. and the war in Gaza who followed, the number of anti-Semitic incidents in Germany suddenly increased in Germany.
« Due to the war in Gaza and unbearable suffering from the Palestinian civilian population, supporting the Israeli government declines in Germany, » says Stitner. Sad consequence: « We have never recorded more anti-Semitic incidents in the streets, in educational institutions, in the sites of memory or on the Internet, than in 2024. Years. »
More attacks on individuals
The number of anti-Semitic incidents directed directly against Jewish or Israeli individuals increased to 1.309. For example, in December in Saxony, one woman read messages in Hebrew on her phone, after which a group of people insulted her and threatened her shouting « Zig Hajl ». For affected persons, such events are especially intimidating.
« The danger of someone was attacked as a Jew or Jewish in Germany objectively increased after 7. October, and yet it seems to discuss the anti-Semitic statements more space than empathy to affected », criticizes the Štajnic.
Being jointly solid with anti-Semitism and Israeli victims after 7. October does not mate « with compassion with what people in Gaza and Criticism of the Israeli government because of its action, » he says.
RIAS also recorded eight cases of extreme violence during the last year. For example, 5. In September 2024. in Munich, the anniversary of the attack on the Olympics in 1972. years, one suspected Islamist was shooting at the Israeli General Consulate and the Nazi Documentation Center. Two people gained minor injuries. The eighteen-year-old perpetrator from Austria was mortally wounded in the exchange of fire with police.
« The fight against anti-Semitism is the task of the whole society »
« Hatred towards Jews in Germany normalized at a shame, » says Felix Klein, a trustee of the German government for Jewish life and fight anti-Semitism. Incidents affect all the spheres of life: « Colleges, where graffiti and share anti-Semitic labels appear, where the behavior of Israel is compared to the Nazis, and women insult as ‘Jewish Ku * ve’. »
The fight against hatred towards Jews must be comprehensive, says Klein. The approach that relies on individual measures is not enough. Instead, the fight against anti-Semitism must be understood as the task of the whole society. He criticizes « collective attribution of responsibility for what happens in the gauze belt. Jews and Jews must just justify themselves for these events, although German citizens are. »
Feeling insecurity among Jewish students
One of the most shocking anti-Semitic attacks last year was a Jewish Student Lahava Shapor, who was brutally beaten in Berlin in early February and had to surgery due to multiple fractures in the facial area. The perpetrator, the then colleague from the Faculty, was later sentenced to three years in prison.
Ron Dekel, President of the Alliance of Jewish students Germany, says: « Many Jewish students no longer feel safe at universities, and it is not an empty floss. » Dekel is therefore demanding the introduction of the anti-Semitism Commissioner’s function at all universities, and incidents must be reported, analyzed and processed. « It’s about studying what we’re interested in, not something where we are safe. Universities have to finally stop tolerating anti-Semitism – no longer allowed to avoid responsibility. »
A huge increase in the number of incidents in schools
Annual report also shows a record increase of almost 2,000 anti-Semitic statements on the Internet – almost every fourth reported incident occurred online: via email, message via applications or comments on social networks. With 544 cases, RIAS also recorded the largest number of anti-Semitic incidents with the right-extremist background so far. In schools, the number of incidents also increased significantly – 284 applications were registered.
When presenting the report, the director of the Rias also rejected the critiques of Israeli journalists, who in one study by RIAS to « exaggerate anti-Semitic incidents » and to interpret the term « anti-Semitism related to Israel ». Stellia finally called for the closure of legal holes: « Prohibition of Calls for Destruction of the Member State of UN and reforming hate law, which would clearly appoint anti-Semitic and racist statements. »
