Almost 20 percent of electricity consumption would be fully electrified mobility, says Verbund boss Strugl (right). Caio Kauffmann
The press: The Austrian economy will experience the third year of recession in a row this year. In addition to high wage costs and bureaucracy, an important reason for this is also the much higher energy costs. Will that ever change again?
Michael Strugl: The industrial power prize in the USA is around eight cents, in China there are about eight to nine cents. In Europe, this price is between 13 and 14 cents. However, these are statistical values, there are differences at the operational level. This difference to the USA has always been there, but it has increased during the gas price crisis. And this distance will not completely disappear because the United States has large gas resources and therefore have relatively cheap gas. Europe no longer has that. We used to have pipeline gas, which was still relatively cheap. Now we mainly use LNG that is a globally traded goods and goes where the price is highest – currently to Europe. As long as this stays that way, the electricity price in Europe will be higher than in the USA – until we become more independent of gas, which is only possible by expanding your own production.
The mobility turn is now to be replaced by fossil fuel. Will this additional request increase the price?
