In the footsteps of the bay: Jordan banned « Muslim brothers » despite their enormous popularity

Jordan banned Muslim brothers, closed offices and confiscated traffic assets after it was found that members of the group were involved in a plot plot, said Interior Minister Massen Al Farai. The movement enjoys very high support in the cities in the country, much of whose population is of Palestinian origin.

For years, Jordan has been looking for the right restrictions on the brothers’ activities (according to human rights defenders, it resorts to harassment of political opponents). Today’s radical measure is at the same time declared a little more than half a year after the legislative elections that the political branch of the group, the Islamic action front, has become the largest faction in parliament, although most places still hold on to government supporters.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have banned the movement, which is in warm relations with Turkey and Qatar.

In Jordan, a country with strong anti-Israel moods in the population, took place in the last year and a half and some of the largest protests in support of Hamas after its attack on the Jewish state with 1,200 casualties that led to the war that caused tens of thousands of Palestinians.

Accusations

The announcement also refers to the arrest last week of 16 Muslim brothers members, claiming that they were trained and funded in Lebanon and planned attacks with rockets and drones against goals in the kingdom. According to Farai, all the activities of the group will be banned, and whoever encourages its ideology will be held accountable.

The Islamist movement, as a branch of which also appeared « Hamas », denied its role in plotting against power since 2024 with the planning of attacks on various purposes in Jordan in order to interact it, which was also charged. However, its representatives assumed that members may have participated – in a personal capacity – in smuggling a weapon for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Security forces said last week that they had opened a rocket production facility to a drone factory where small -range missiles were being developed with at least one rocket ready for launch.

According to Al Farai, operations for the production of explosives and other weapons were also detected, with missiles and explosives being held in residential areas.

What’s next

Political parties and organizations, including media and civil society groups, will not have the right to interact with the dissolved Muslim brothers and publish their content. It will also be forbidden to spread the ideology of the group.

The work in the Parliament at the Islamic Action Front, the political branch, which was also the subject of today’s searches, is also questioned. In the official announcement of Al Farai, he did not specify exactly what the reflection on the party would be.
