In the footsteps of famous jazz women
Jazz women will hold a concert last winter, April 23, in the hall at. 20 under the heading fever. Jazz women are: Kristjana Stefánsdóttir, Rebekka Blöndal, Sigrún Erla Grétarsdóttir, Silva Þórðardóttir and Guðlaug Dröfn Ólafsdóttir. Jazz women have worked in recent years and set up various concerts in honor of jazz singers, held Christmas concerts and concerts in honor of women in music.
The premise that the founding of Jazz women is that Rebecca and Kristjána got the idea of holding a concert in honor of Ella Fitzgerald and honoring other singers. The concerts were held in the hall in 2022 and the reception became so good that the concerts were a total of five. More concerts followed.
Now Jazz women are going to perform the songs of famous jazz women last winter in the hall of Kopavogur. Songs will be performed by Peggy Lee, Julie London, Rosemary Clooney, Anita O’Day and Judy Garland.
« There are many things that catch us with these singers, » says Guðlaug Dröfn Ólafsdóttir. « The songs are lovely, the sound is fascinating and the lyrics are always good. We also find how well these songs are to the audience. »
« What I find most fascinating is the season, the golden age, there was so much glamor. The songs are good and the lyrics are beautiful and like little stories, as there is a lot of this music from movies and musicals, » says Rebekka Blöndal.
During the concert, they join Vignir Þór Stefánsson’s jazz quartet and include: Vignir Þór Stefánsson, conductor who plays piano, Andrés Thor on guitar, Matthías Hemstock on drums and Thorgrímur Jónsson on double bass.
« We are in very good hands, this is a selection team, » says Guðlaug Dröfn.
Three members of Jazz women were nominated for the Icelandic Music Prize this year, Kristjana Stefánsdóttir (Jazz singer of 2023), Silva Þórðardóttir and Rebekka Blöndal (jazz singer of 2022). « These nominations were incredible recognition of this work we have chosen in life, which is to be jazz musicians. In such a small scene that the jazz is, it is incredibly important to get confirmation that what you are doing is important. I think we all agree with it, »
Ahead are Christmas concerts, in a similar vein as they have previously held. « We have held a Christmas concert in honor of Ella Fitzgerald where we sang Christmas songs that Ella sang at the time. Last year we changed and the concerts were more in the spirit of Andrews Sisters and Bing Crosby and Sigtryggur Baldursson sang with us and played.
Ella Fitzgerald is a favorite of Jazz women. « She was a genius at changing melodies and making them. The songs she sang her became. The interpretation was beautiful and it was a great charm in the voice and you smile at hearing her sing. Guðlaug Dröfn adds: « We have listened to her a lot and she is an incredible role model. »
