In the EU Council on May 27, they will discuss the deprivation of Hungary’s right to vote in the European Union
At a meeting of the EU Council on General Issues, which will take place in Brussels on May 27, the possibility of applying Article 7 of the European Union Treaty to Hungary will be discussed, which allows to deprive the state of the right to vote in the EU if there is a risk of serious violation of its values on which the EU is established.

Article 7 of the Treaty on the European Union allows to suspend certain rights of the Member State, in particular, the rights of vote, if there is a serious and constant violation of the Member State of Fundamental Values of the EU.
After Brussels in May 2024 closed a similar case against PolandHungary is currently the only EU state to which the sanction procedure has been launched, in accordance with Article 7 of the EU Treaty.
In April 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia Margus Tsakhkn said that in the European Union are approaching the deprivation of Hungary’s right to vote in the EU Council through blocking her decisions on Russia.
