In several Estonian rivers of Povarno district, a large number of dead fish were noticed
Recently, a large amount of dead fish, mainly roach, have been noticed in several rivers of Pyarnumaa. The cause of death is unknown, but both fishermen and representatives of environmental authorities are concerned, BNS reports, referring to the material Pärnu Postimees.
“For several days already in the Sauga River, a dead fish floating downstream. I picked it up for a couple of hundred meters. What is the problem?” – the reader of the portal Pärnu Postimees Ann Put expressed his concern.
In recent days, there were a lot of dead fish on the banks of rivers in Povarnumaa, the cause of what was happening is being clarified.
Jacob Kozu, the executive director of Kaluriküla, first noticed dead fish last Friday. “Then these were six or seven dead roachs,” he said, adding that at first he did not pay much attention to this.
The situation changed on the weekend: on Sunday, on a area of about 150 meters long, one could see hundreds of dead fish, which the family literally gathered in the morning in Kaluriküla in the morning. “In this short site, we“ caught ”the dead fish into two boxes,” Koza admitted.
The goat cannot name the cause of the mass death of fish, since recently the weather conditions have been stable and quite cool, and such conditions should be favorable for the fish.
The fan of fishing Erkki Mayvyvi also said that there is a lot of dead roach in the Sauga River. An experienced fisherman added that he did not observe anything like this in previous years.
The experienced fisherman Erkki Myvyvy says that I have never seen such a picture in these rivers before.
A few more people noticed the same sight and shared information on social networks. For example, Caspar, who traveled by boat along the Sauga River to the railway bridge, wrote that the picture is very gloomy: thousands of dead fish, mainly roach, but also tench and small bream.
According to Tanel Türn, the head of the fishing department and water animals of the Department of the Environment, the dead fish was discovered, for example, in the Sauga River, as well as in the Reiu and Pyarn rivers. Currently, the rivers mainly find a dead roach.
Türun said that the inspectors of the Department of Environment got acquainted with the situation on the weekend. “So far, no signs of pollution have been found. The exact cause of the death of fish is set,” he said.
Since the rivers have still been found mainly dead roach, and this is the unnatural mortality of one type of fish, this indicates an infection, and not pollution.
“In the case of pollution, several species of fish at once, most likely, would have died,” Turn noted, adding that the department also turned to the Marine Institute for an assessment of the situation.
Heli Shpilev, fish specialist at the University of Tartu at the Tartu University, said that the highest mortality rate of fish is usually observed in the spring, since during the period of spawning of fish weaker and the natural mortality of fish is higher. “Of course, it should not be such that heaps of dead fish lay on the shore,” the specialist admitted, adding that the causes of the death of fish are still being clarified.
The environmental research center took water samples and measures the level of oxygen in areas where dead fish was discovered.
Specialists of the Department of Environment also took several dead roachs with them to send them to the University of Natural Sciences for Expertise.
If a large amount of dead fish brought to the river bank, it is necessary to report this on the state information hotline 1247.
