In prison for Brabant ‘horror breeder’ Jan P. for leaving care of hundreds of dogs

Jan P., who came to be known as ‘De Horrorfokker from Eersel’, his breeding was ‘the most beautiful company in the Netherlands’ during the court case and the care of the more than five hundred seized dogs ‘TipTop in order’. The judge thinks differently. P. was found guilty by the court for omitting the correct care of the dogs in his breeding Kwispel Enzo.

P. has been sentenced to a prison sentence of fifteen months, of which ten are conditional. In addition, he has been imposed the maximum holding ban of ten years and one of his BVs is given a fine of 40,000 euros. His ex-partner, Stephanie D., who was also involved in the company, was sentenced to a ten-month prison sentence, a community service sentence of two hundred hours and a three-year ban to hold animals.

« Animals have rights, just like us. Healthcare is forbidden, » said the public prosecutor at the beginning of March in the court in Den Bosch, during the hearing about dog breeders Jan P. and Stephanie D. of their breeding, more than five hundred dogs were seized by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

The dogs were held in dirty lofts with dangerous sharp edges, lay on straw drenched with urine and were surrounded by their own stools. The animals had tartar, felted hair and skin conditions. When the dog lofts were empty, P. filled them with other animals: ponies, goats, sheep, pigs, guinea pigs, rabbits and poultry – who were also seized. Those were more than 360 animals.

They were taken care of Picobello, says the former dog breeder who is suspected of serious negligence

During the day The ruling of the judgment It was once again emphasized how serious the negligence was. « It is painful to conclude that the animals have suffered so much. Many dogs had no access to an adequate amount of water of appropriate quality and were housed under insufficient hygienic conditions. »

Undercover images

The case, which is based on two NVWA inspections, was rolled in 2022 by a video report of animal welfare organization House of Animals. « We already knew that he was not allowed to breed there and we had received various reports, » says founder Karen Soeters. « That was a reason for us to proceed to a pseudo bar – and to film that. »

The pseudo bar, and later also employee of House of Animals who went undercover, has led to a revealing video. It shows how hundreds of dogs were kept in ‘miserable state’. House of Animals then reported this. Soeters: « It went so far, much further than it becomes clear from the reports of the NVWA or the seat. While the Froorned P. with a garden hose, the lofts clean, while the dogs were still there, after which their fur froze. »

Criminal networks

You have to protect animals against these types of people, says Soeters. The dogs at Kwispel and so on were « terrified, » she says. « I have been all over the world. Of course I know extremely fearful dogs, but that we have that here in the Netherlands by breeders like this, that cannot be true. »

Yet there are many more breeders who operate that way, she says. « They are criminal networks that involve a horrible amount of money. Jan has earned millions. » And not alone, according to the organization. « Most can go their divine course. » Soeters reports to be happy in a press release from House of Animals « that he has been punished. » « But I think it is a particularly low punishment for someone who has so much animal suffering on his notch. »

She hopes that people looking for a dog in the purchase of it will be better thought of for this kind of practices. « These kinds of breeders say everything to talk to the buyer’s right. » They say the puppy is dirty because he has just played and that Mama can’t come because she « has to rest, » says Soeters. « Even when people realize that it is wrong, they believe that they save a dog. » But it does maintain this way of breeding.

Jan P., who also has a Belgian passport, already indicated during the case that he is leaving for Belgium. Last year it became clear that he has already continued his practices there.
