In Paris, a social housing project on a site of the Labor Stock Exchange as soon as voted, as soon as abandoned – Liberation
The Paris Labor Stock Exchange will finally welcome any social housing or emergency accommodation center. The lifting of shields of the Parisian intersyndicale (CFDT, CGT, FO, CFE-CGC, CFTC, UNSA, Solidaires and FSU) who called for withdrawal from the project threatening « An essential place to advise, support and organize workers in Paris ”, has borne fruit.
The Parisian executive renounced the project by not putting on the agenda during the Paris Council on Tuesday, April 8. During the local council of March 25, the town hall of Paris-Center, which brings together the first four districts of the capital, had taken the first stage. It had adopted a wish in favor of the transformation of the Labor Stock Exchange, public establishment of the City which welcomes offices, meetings, permanence and general assemblies of Parisian trade union organizations.
Carried by the socialist mayor of Paris-Center, Ariel Weil, the proposal had only been supported by the elected socialists, from the municipal majority. The elected environmentalists and communists had voted and those of the right and the center had abstained.
It is the Turbigo annex, located in the street of the same name, in the 3rd arrondissement, which was targeted to create in the short term an emergency accommodation center, and in the medium term, after renovation work, social housing. The main building, rue du Château-d’Eau in the 10th arrondissement, and the annex of the Boulevard du Temple, in the 3rd arrondissement, were not concerned. These two sites regularly host events open to the public.
« We need to explore every square meter, we need to be exemplary and use all the areas of which the city is owner which are not 100% used in current uses », had justified Ariel Weil Tuesday April 8, when explaining the voting to the Paris Council.
The Parisian inter -union launched on March 28, 2025 An online petition who had collected nearly 4,700 signatures in thirteen days. She also announced a rally in front of the town hall on Friday April 11, on the sidelines of the Paris Council. This withdrawal is a victory for Adèle Telz, responsible for the claim policy at the CGT Paris and initiator of the petition, because « Opposing workers’ rights and social housing was fully unwelcome and even unhealthy, since it is often the same people who are affected by this support ». « When it comes to mobilizing for the well-being of Parisian workers, the union works »welcomes the secretary general of the CFDT of Paris, Aurélie Lagaville, who says he is « Reassured » to see a project « which opposed the needs « abandoned.
Adèle Telz also greets « The union of all trade union organizations, which has weighed completely decisive but also the political support of a certain number of elected officials ». Like Marie-Claire Carrère-Géé, senator and councilor of Paris (LR) who sent a letter on April 3 to the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, adding that « The Labor Stock Exchange, a high place of unionism of our capital, cannot serve as an adjustment variable » and that a maintenance of the decision « Would constitute a provocation vis-à-vis organizations (union) in particular and the world of work in general ».
Another political support, that of the communist group which presented Tuesday a wish offering the renovation of the three sites of the Labor Stock Exchange « In order to guarantee good conditions of use and access to Parisian employees ». Supported by the municipal executive, he was adopted by the Paris Council. A first step before the resolution was put to the voices.
