Residents of Narva can now apply for financial support for problems with mental health. The new order provides for the possibility of obtaining various services – from counseling to therapy at the city account. Funds for the program were allocated by the state.

On Thursday, March 27, the Narva City Assembly adopted the procedure for allocating funding for the provision of services related to mental health. According to the document, adults and children registered and living in Narva will be able to receive support for psychological, crisis, family counseling and family therapy. Financing will be carried out from the city budget, and in some cases a personal contribution of the recipient will be required.

“Previously, such services were financed at the expense of various projects, but from this year the state has centralized funds for such services. 86,288 euros were laid down on the implementation of this initiative in the NARVA budget for 2025. At the same time, a specialist in need of support will be able to choose a specialist,” said the director of the Department of Social Assistance to Christie Murk.

According to a study conducted by the Institute for the Development of Health and the University of Tartu in 2020-2022, every fifth (20%) resident of Estonia may experience an alarming disorder, and more than a quarter (28%)-depression. In the period from 2016 to 2021, almost one type of mental disorder was diagnosed with almost a quarter of the adult population.

To receive assistance, you must contact the Social Administration of Narva with a statement and, if necessary, provide additional documents. The decision to provide support will be made within 10 business days.

Residents of Narva will be able to get up to 10 sessions per year, each lasting up to 90 minutes. Services should be provided within 6 months from the date of the first session.

Particular attention is paid to the flexibility of the system: in exceptional cases, the Department of Social Protection may highlight support for services not specified in the resolution, on the recommendation of a special commission.
