The Dubrava Clinical Hospital on Wednesday, April 16 from 2 pm to 6 pm will be held by Open Doors Day, marking the 18th Croatian Day of Cancer of Head and Doors, as part of the international public health initiative « Week of Consciousness and Neck Tumors ».

Citizens will be provided with free preventive examinations without referrals and previous announcements in the P6 -P8 clinic, on the ground floor of the Dubrava Clinical Hospital (Gojko Susak Avenue 6). The examinations will be carried out by the multidisciplinary team of specialist at the Clinic for Surgery of Faces, Jaws and mouth, which also acts as a reference center of the Ministry of Health for Surgery of Tumors, Jaws and mouth.

So far, more than 4,000 citizens have been examined within this public health action at KB Dubrava, and this year’s campaign takes place under the slogan « Don’t lose your head – view on time! » The statement said.

Head and neck cancer The seventh is the most common cancer in the world, and more than 890,000 people suffer from it annually. In Croatia, about 1,200 new cases are diagnosed in Croatia each year, which means that three people are ill every day, while almost half of them lose their lives due to late diagnosis.

The examination is fast and simple, and literally saves lives, experts say

Compared to the European average, Croatia has a similar burden of illness. About 25 newcomers per 100,000 inhabitants are recorded annually, which is comparable to most EU countries. However, the mortality rate in Croatia is still high, primarily due to the late detection of the disease and poor response to preventive examinations.

Focus: Cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx

The oral cavity cancer is the most common head and neck cancer, with more than 350 new cases a year in Croatia. It most often affects men over 50, but it is worrying that it is increasingly diagnosed with younger people who do not consume alcohol or use tobacco products.

Unlike the cancer of the pharynx, the connection between HPV infection and the cancer of the oral cavity is minimal-less than 5% of cases of oral cancer is associated with HPV. However, in the cancer of the pharynx, especially in the area of ​​tonsils and the base of the tongue, HPV is present in more than 70% of cases. These tumors often affect younger non -smokers and have a slightly better prognosis than tumors caused by traditional factors such as smoking and alcohol.

Pay attention to changes in the oral cavity, especially on and around the tongue

As doctors point out, the examination is fast, non -invasive, painless – and can save life, since the head and neck tumor is treated successfully if it does not discover on time. Citizens who have observed changes in the oral cavity (wounds, white or red spots, pain, difficult swallowing), air conditioning of teeth or dentures, nodes or swelling on the neck, long -term hoarseness, sore throat, ear or jaw, permanently clogged nose or persistent nasal bleeding.

The most important risk factors for the development of head and neck cancer are smoking and consumption of alcohol, but HPV infections also have an important role in the development of individual tumors, especially in the pharynx area. Prevention involves the cessation of harmful habits, vaccination against HPV, education, and timely and regular examinations.
