In Indonesia, the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano has erupted-Liberation

A cloud of ash one kilometer high. A volcano in the east of Indonesia Erupled twice this Monday, May 19, pushing the authorities to raise the level of alert to its maximum.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on the Tourist Island of Flores first erupted for the first time at 0:08 am this Monday (7:08 p.m. French time), projecting thick ash at 1.2 km above its summit, the local volcanology agency said in a press release. A second eruption followed at 9:36 am (4:36 am French time).

The authorities had already noted the level of alert on Sunday evening for this volcano with two peaks of 1,584 meters high. « The results of the visual and instrumental analyzes have shown that the activities of Lewotobi Laki-Laki are still high », Explained Muhammad Wafid, director of the Indonesian geological agency on Sunday in a statement, warning against the risk of a « Even greater eruption ».

On Sunday, a series of eruptions projected ashes up to six kilometers above the Laki-Laki summit. The director of the geological agency therefore asked residents to wear masks in order to protect themselves from volcanic ashes and tourists not to approach less than six kilometers from the crater.

He also called for caution towards potential muds or debris flows in the event of heavy rain, in particular for communities around the rivers which have their source at the top of the volcano.

Lewotobi Laki-Laki had already erupted several times in November, killing nine people, canceling dozens of international flights to Bali and resulting in the evacuation of thousands of people.
