Waregem

A 22-year-old young man was caught in Waregem on an electric scooter that could reach no less than 102 kilometers per hour when checking the rolls. The twenties said he did not know that his scooter was not limited. « I wanted to drive it far, not fast. »

« Every now and then I get cold from a file, » said the attorney, who was clearly also impressed by the absurd speed that the e-Step could achieve. The 22-year-old driver was picked from traffic on July 12, 2024, after which the police put his specially looking electric scooter on the roles. The rig appeared to be able to drive more than 100 kilometers per hour, while Steps must be bordered at 25 kilometers per hour to be allowed on public roads.

« By buying a robust scooter with wide tires, a suspension and a large range, he was able to regain his freedom. He paid 6,000 euros for it and wanted to drive to Paris with it »

Lawyer young man

« My client bought that step only a week earlier and did not know he was not limited, » argued the young man’s lawyer for the police court in Kortrijk. « He never drove it so quickly, that is not the reason why he bought that step. My client has a visual impairment and can never get a driver’s license. At the same time it is no secret that public transport is not always easy. »

Regain freedom

« By buying a robust scooter with wide tires, a suspension and a large range, he was able to regain his freedom. He paid 6,000 euros for it and wanted to ride it to Paris. My client is already looking hard away from his visual impairment, which was genetically determined, and would like his step back. »

« It was never my intention to drive quickly with that scooter, just far, » said the young man himself. « I have great fascinations for everything with engines, it hurts extra for me not to be able to drive. I know it is extra dangerous for me because I am visually impaired, I bought that step because he stands out and because I can cover large distances with it. »

Whether the judge forfeit the scooter, we know on 2 May. (Jof)
