In 2024, less marriages were registered in Estonia than a year earlier, while the number of divorces increased by almost 10%, the Department of Statistics reports.

According to the department, in 2024, 6361 marriage was concluded, which is 2% less compared to 2023. At the same time, the number of divorces increased by 9.2%, reaching 2893 cases. The average duration of the divorced marriage was 11 years.

Marriage trends

Last year, 6361 steam entered the marriage, which is 143 less than in 2023. The average age for the first marriage remained stable: men married an average of 32 years, women at 30 years old. Among men who have married, 25% were younger than 30 years old, and among women this figure was 37%.
The most popular day for weddings was Friday, August 8, when 126 pairs got married. Among other demanded dates – April 24 (90 pairs), July 24 (89 pairs), August 24 (76 pairs) and May 24 (63 pairs). 30% of couples at the time of registration of marriage already had at least one common child.

Estonian women (555 cases) more often married partners of other nationalities than men (492 cases). Most often, the Estonians married Russians and Ukrainians. In 75% of marriages (4753), at least one of the spouses had Estonian citizenship, and most marriages (3527) were between the Estonians. Marriages with the participation of Russians were 1695, with Ukrainians – 471.

9.7% of all marriages (618) were registered abroad, of which 38 marriages are between Estonia citizens. From January 1, 2024, same -sex marriages were allowed in the country: 207 such unions were concluded, 139 of them – between women and 68 – between men.

Divorces on the rise

In 2024, 2893 marriages were divorced, which is 245 more than in 2023. This is the first noticeable increase in the number of divorces in recent years, while their number remains below 3000 since 2019. Each fourth marriage (23%) previously married, and more than half of repeated marriages were between partners for whom this was also not the first union.

The average age with repeated marriage was 47.9 years for men and 44.1 years for women. 56.5% of the divorced couples had minor children. Marriages that lasted less than a year amounted to 3% of the divorces (97 cases). The average duration of the divorced marriage is 11 years, but the median is 8 years. At the same time, 53% of the divorces concerned marriages in short 10 years, and 6 marriages lasted 50 years or more.

Of the 6220 marriages concluded in 2014, by 2024 about a quarter were terminated (1421). Same -sex marriages are terminated 4.
