In cycle 2, almost 14 percent of the students have to be extended

With the elementary school reform in 2009, the class repetition was abolished and the « Allongen de Cycle » was introduced. The highest number of « Allongemats » (extension) occurs year after year in cycle 2.

One of the main reasons is the German literacy, with which many students have problems, writes Minister of Education Claude Meisch (DP) in his response to a parliamentary question by Francine Closer and Ben Polidori (both LSAP). The government had to launch the Alpha project (literacy in German or French) to tackle this problem and to reduce the number of « allong people ».

In the school year 2023/24, the Ministry counted 1,022 cycle extensions in cycle 2, which corresponds to 13.56 percent of all students in this cycle. In cycle 3 there were 736 cases (10.43 percent), 537 cases were 1 (7.15 percent) in cycle and 28 cases in cycle 4 (0.52 percent).

Reform of the ESG substance is in progress

As for the reform of the lower level of the general secondary lesson, the minister informs that it is not enough to adapt the doctoral criteria, « knowing that the sitting is not a solution ». The work on the reform is in progress and the ministry is working on a whole series of thematic points such as the analysis of school results and school career, orientation and tutorial, internal and external differentiation, the teaching materials as well as the « Cours de Base » and the « Cours Avancés ». Based on this analysis, concrete solutions would be developed.

The answer also contains numbers for the ESG students of the lower level (7E up to 5E), which in the Préparatoire or on a 5E the adaptation were downgraded.

In the school year 2023/24, 34 7E-student down into the Préparatoire, which corresponds to 1.4 percent of all 7E-Pupils. To 6E 83 students were downgraded (3.3 percent) and 62 students were on a 5E d’Apaptation oriented (1.5 percent).
