In the UK, a 36-year-old woman, who was transplanted by her sister’s uterus, gave birth to a healthy girl.
About it reports The Guardian.
Grace Davidson was born with a rare disease, which has not had a uterus from birth. At the same time, the ovaries of women worked and produced eggs.
Before enrollment in organ transplant surgery, infertility has been treated. Doctors selected seven embryos from the woman and froze them for further artificial insemination.
In February 2023, Grace Davidson transplanted the uterus from her 42-year-old sister-Amy Perry, who had two daughters at the time. A few months later, one of the frozen embryos was planted using artificial insemination (IVF) technique.
In order for the woman’s body not to reject the transplanted organ, she has taken immunosuppressants throughout pregnancy.
The baby was born in February 2025 during a planned caesarean section in a hospital in London. The girl was named Amy Isabel. Amy-in honor of the sister, and Isabel-in honor of the surgeon, Isabel Kiroga, who works on the development of transplantation technique.
”For me, it is full joy, admiration. I’m very happy for Angus and Grace, they are a wonderful couple. It’s fantasy« , – shared the emotions of Isabel Kiroga.
This is the first case in Britain when a baby with a transplanted uterus was able to carry a baby. In general, the world’s first such case occurred in 2014, reports BBC. Since then, surgeons have conducted about 135 such transplants in different countries, including the US, China, France, Germany, India and Turkey.
In total, 65 women who were transplanted by uterus were able to carry and give birth to children.
