In Barcelona, ​​a large vessel was found on the site of the former fishing market, which sank about 550 years ago when part of the city was underwater.

The archaeological find was discovered during excavations before building a new center of biomedicine and biodiversity, informs The Guardian.

Earlier, a bomb shelter of the Civil War in Spain and traces of the old market of the XVIII century were found at this place.

« We hoped to find archaeological remnants of boats in this place, which is located near the port and artificial stone embankment, which were working zones in the XV and XVI centuries. Two years later, we were lucky to find a boat »– said the leading researcher Santi Placios.

Now archaeologists have come across a destroyed forage of a large boat that could sank during a storm in the XV or XVI century. A fragment of 10 meters long and three meters wide was found at a depth of five meters below sea level.

Part of the vessel is decorated with more than 30 curved wooden parts that kept piles due to wooden and iron nails. Scientists say that this design is typical for medieval boats In the middle of the 15th century, which previously revealed throughout Europe, including the Mediterranean.

The boat was named « SIIIIITadel I » in honor of the park nearby. Experts say that the wood of the former vessel is very fragile, but for centuries it has been preserved due to the moisture and sand that has been covered.

« To stay in good condition, the wood needs constant moistening. When we move the boat, it will have to be disassembled by parts to continue the study »– explained the restorator of Delia Egillo.

Currently, scientists make a map of the place of archeological find, mark parts of the vessel and take samples from it. The sunken ship is expected to be taken to a special facility where they will be treated with water -soluble wax to strengthen and better preserve its design.

Experts hope that the old beams and nails of the ship will help shed light on how boats were built in the Middle Ages. Researchers believe that the analysis of wood and resin will tell you where the boat was made.

This is not the first ship found in Barcelona. 17 years ago, a ship of the 15th century was found near the railway station under the name « Barcelon I ».
